Show Cause

If you are 'at risk' and continue to experience difficulties with your studies, schools or universities may send you an email asking you to 'show cause'. You will have to make a show cause submission to explain why you’re having troubles. What to do if you are asked to attend a ‘Show Cause’?


The process of ‘show cause’:

  1. Receive a warning letter and ask you to make a show cause submission.
  2. Submit a ‘show cause submission’ within stated days of the show cause notification email.
  3. To attend a hearing organised by school or university.
  4. Receive the result of Hearing
  • If win, stay in school/university and continuing study;
  • If lose, can choose to internal or external appeal.


  5. Receive the result of Appeal

  • If win, stay in school/university and continuing study;
  • If lose, student will be excluded, and receive Section 20, and be reported to DIBP.


  6. Student needs to submit an explanation to DIBP within 28 days (Otherwise your visa will be cancelled)

  • If win, student visa will not be cancelled, and student can continue stay in Australia and study;
  • If lose, student visa will be cancelled and need to send an Appeal application to AAT.
